General Conference Singing Time Idea: Match the Message Song Hunt

I loved how in his closing remarks, President Oaks’ said, “The Tabernacle Choir has just sung a musical prayer, “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus.”

Music truly is a way of worship and prayer, and that’s what I love about singing time! We can share our love of the Savior through music. I’m not great with the spoken word, and I find I can express my feelings and thoughts through the beautiful songs of the church better than anything else!

I wanted to come up with an engaging activity to do for the week after General Conference. This activity keeps kids engaged, gets them moving, and (most importantly) helps them actually connect the message of the songs from conference to themselves!

Instead of just picking songs randomly, this activity helps children think about what the songs mean, how they relate to following Jesus, and hopefully feel a greater sense of belonging as they sing the songs along with Tabernacle Choir!

I’ve included printables for my clues and the songs I’m using at the end of the post. Feel free to just use this idea and adapt as needed!

What Is the “Match the Message” Song Hunt?

This is a simple singing time activity where children listen to a clue about a gospel principle and then search the room to find the song from General Conference that matches that message.

It turns singing time into a game – but still keeps the focus on learning and testimony.

How It Works

  1. Before Primary, hide song titles around the room
  2. During singing time, read a clue about a message
  3. A child (or group) finds the matching song
  4. Bring it to the front and sing it together

You can print off the words for the songs if your kids aren’t familiar with them (Camille’s Primary Ideas has my favorite simple charts), turn on the subtitles, or just let the children listen to the music and sing where they can!

Why This Activity Works

I love this activity because it naturally:

  • Helps kids think about the meaning behind the songs
  • Connects music to gospel principles
  • Helps emphasize General Conference messages
  • Keeps even the wiggly kids engaged
  • Makes singing time feel different (in a good way)

It’s also really easy to adapt depending on your group size or time.

Songs You Can Use

Here are the songs I created the clues for. I chose songs from the last couple of General Conference that I felt like my primary kids would at least be familiar with. You can choose whatever songs you want, but these go along with the printable clues below.

Optional Teaching Moments

If you want to take it a step further, you can ask a quick question after each song:

  • “What did this song teach us?”
  • “When can we live this this week?”

This keeps the activity simple but adds a really meaningful layer.

One of my favorite parts of this activity is how it mirrors what we hope happens during General Conference.

We listen, we look for messages, and we find the ones that matter to us.

This is a simple way to help kids start practicing that now.
