As much as I’ve tried, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that I am not a morning person.
In high school, I would get up early every morning for a church class called Seminary that took place before school. Let’s just say I was never in a good mood.
In college, I made the mistake of signing up for classes at 8 and 9 AM.
Another big mistake. For the rest of my college career, I did my best to never have a class before 10 AM. I think my grades thanked me for it.
I’m definitely more of a night owl (even though most nights I end up staying up later than I really want to). That probably has something to do with why I don’t like waking up early!
Because I don’t wake up early, I don’t usually make a big breakfast…because, well, Jack has usually been up for a while already, and Forrest has already gotten Jack cereal. I love breakfast food, but it’s hard for me to do in the morning.
Lately, I’ve been just having a granola bar for breakfast, and it’s just not cutting it. I often did this in college as well, and I would find myself spending way too much money on vending machine and fast food.
So, the other day, I thought it would be a good idea to think up some “On the Go” breakfast ideas. These require little preparation and can easily be eaten on the way out the door, on the way to class or while you are trying to get the kids ready for the day.
We noticed at Sam’s Club the other day that there were lots of yummy breakfast options that were hearty and tasty, so we figured we’d try them out. So good and great for on the go. We decided to buy products that were participating in the Tyson Foods Hunger Heroes Back to School event. For every package of specially marked products you buy at Sam’s Club, Tyson donates four ounces of meat to a child in hunger to help support. Fast food for you and you can effortlessly help a child in need. Win-win!
These are all items that I really enjoy and don’t usually result in me feeling starved a few hours later. I wish I had this list when I was in college! However, I am grateful that I’m able to put a meal on the table for my family every day – and that I don’t even know what it truly means to be starved.
When I look at my boys, I can’t imagine how hard it would be to not be able to provide the basic necessities of life – which is why the Hunger Heroes organization is so amazing to me. I know that I can’t solve world hunger, but I’m glad that I can participate in helping this organization do their best to help children eat.
1. Jimmy Dean® pancakes & sausage:
We’ve bought these a few times over the year, and they are delicious. I much prefer them over corn dogs! It combines two of our favorite breakfast foods – blueberry pancakes and breakfast sausage – and it makes it super easy to eat. Jack thought this was so good.
When I first saw them, I was a little concerned about blueberry pancakes and sausage together, but it works. It really works.
2. Oatmeal in a Cup:
Oatmeal is one of my go-to breakfast foods. Not only is it great for breastfeeding moms (which I am), but you can really customize it in so many ways.
With that said – not super convenient to carry around a bowl, especially if you are in the car or walking to a class. Fortunately, several companies have come out with oatmeal in a microwaveable cup. Just heat it up in the microwave, grab a spoon, and you can be on your way!
3. Jimmy Dean® stuffed hashbrowns:
I love these – I think the idea is so creative. It’s great for when you want something with a little more oomph. It’s also great for people like me who tend to burn hash browns when cooking them on the stove. Oops.
It has all sorts of yummy goodness inside – bacon, sausage, cheese…what more could you want in a fast breakfast? Best of all, they are super crispy, which I’m pretty impressed by since it was made in the microwave.
4. Yogurt with Granola:
I LOVE yogurt with granola. Granola can be surprisingly filling, and I just think there’s nothing better than combining it with yogurt. Even better? Throwing in some fresh berries.
You have to be careful to make sure the yogurt you get doesn’t have too much sugar, but I often will have this for breakfast. There are some yogurts that even have mixins that are in the package that you just “flip” in when you are ready to eat. Those are my favorite!
5. Jimmy Dean® mini pancake sandwiches
This is similar to the sausage and blueberry pancake, but it’s presented a little bit differently. I love how they are like a little sandwich, and that there is syrup in them. It makes for a much less messy pancake breakfast.
6. Pancake Cups:
If you can’t tell, we love pancakes around here. But they sure can be time-consuming to make (and produce a lot of dishes!) These are so brilliant! It makes a fluffy, flavorful pancake in just a matter of minutes in the microwave (complete with syrup!) I’ve seen these available at a few different stores!
7. Smoothie (Blender Jar!):
Pretty classic – a smoothie! We always like to get the big packages of frozen fruit from Sam’s Club. It makes it really easy to make a fast smoothie. We also have blender cups that came with our Ninja blender, which makes it even easier to take on the go.
8. Muffin Tin Breakfasts:
We’ve shared two delicious breakfasts that you can make in muffin tins – sausage grits muffins and muffin tin omelets. You can make a big batch of these, store them in the freezer, and then heat them up right before you run out the door!
9. Breakfast Burritos:
These take a little bit of planning, but it’s one of my favorite fast items to have the freezer. We love these freezer-ready breakfast burritos, as well as this version that’s a little better for you.
10. Eggs in a Mug:
I love having eggs for breakfast, but I rarely make them (again, because I’m not a morning person). But did you know you can make them in the microwave? Just beat together two eggs, two tablespoons of milk, and add some salt, pepper, or cheese to them. Add it to a microwave safe mug – heat for 45 seconds and then check. Then heat for an additional 45 seconds, or until they are set. Easy-peasy and delicious!
I’m grateful that we are able to have breakfasts and not worry about where our next meal is coming from. For many, this isn’t the case. As I mentioned, Tyson Foods and Sam’s Club are teaming up to fight hunger with the Tyson Hunger Heroes campaign. They have donated 1 Million meals over the last few years, help us double that and donate 1 Million this year.
It makes me happy to see companies like these really working to better the lives of the most vulnerable humans in our community – children. Make sure you keep your eyes out for these specially marked products that are participating this year. These are all great for breakfast, after school snacks, and even dinner. I know we are always stocked up in our freezer!
When my first son was a baby, we were in college and not really making much money. There were a few times where we were the recipients of kindness from others to help put food on our tables.
The time that comes to mind is when Jack had just gotten out of the hospital for the second time when he had RSV. Forrest had been unable to work for a while, and since I was just two weeks postpartum, I hadn’t been working either. To say we were short on money was an understatement.
One night, we opened the door to find a family from our church on the porch with bags and bags of groceries – they knew were going through a hard time, and so they went and bought things that we would be able to use for the next few weeks. This family had five children at the time, and I knew that money was probably tight for them, but it really touched me that they served us in this way.
That experience really made me realize that even when you can’t solve everyone’s problems, a small act like that can make a big difference. Which is why I love the Hunger Heroes campaign – purchasing these may not seem like a big deal, but it can make all the difference in a child’s life.
