10 Simple Curb Appeal Ideas Anyone Can Do!

10 Simple Curb Appeal Ideas Anyone Can Do!

Being a homeowner comes with its pros and cons, but we have really enjoyed being able to update our house and make it our own.

While our changes have been slow going, it’s always so fun when we can do something rather simple and have it totally change the look of things.

The outside of our home hasn’t needed a ton of updates (yet), and it looked pretty nice when we moved in…but we have had a few projects in mind – such as replacing the concrete patio with pavers.

However, that’s a bit expensive, so we’ve focused on different things that have made a big difference. I thought I’d share a few different inexpensive ways to update your home’s curb appeal. Some of these we have done, and others we plan to do soon!

Thank you to Mid America Shutters for partnering with us on this post.

  • Shutters

We recently were sent some Mid America Shutters, which is one of the leading manufacturers of siding accessories. Chances are, as you walk around your neighborhood, you will see plenty of homes with their shutters and siding.

The windows on the top part of our house were missing shutters, and it’s been on our to-do list for awhile. We felt like our home’s colors were a bit blah, so we thought it would be fun to get a bit more vibrant of a color for our shutters.

We chose a deep red color that we felt would compliment the gold tones our home already had. Forrest spent an afternoon placing them, and it was amazing what a huge difference they made!

We chose a classic style from Mid-America, and every time we drive up to the house, I can’t help but admire them! We have some lower shutters on the house that we weren’t able to remove, so I can’t wait to paint them to match these beautiful ones soon.

  • New Front Door (or Paint)

The front door is one of the most important parts of the curb appeal for your house, in my opinion. It’s also something that can pretty easily be updated or swapped out for something that fits your style a little bit more.

We are one of the only houses on our block that has double doors, which I love. We are currently trying to decide whether or not we want to replace them or just paint them. Jack accidentally broke off a piece of the framing on one of the doors though, so our choice may be a little simpler now!

Even if you don’t want to get new doors, using a fresh coat of paint or changing out the door knobs can make a huge difference.

  • Paint/Replace mailbox

This is one I hope to do soon. Our mailbox just looks kind of old and multi-colored. A fresh coat of paint can make a world of a difference.

There are also tons of different kinds of mailboxes out there – so why not pick one that fits your personality? My grandpa actually has one that is a dragon – all the grandchildren always loved seeing it when we would go to visit (and now the great-grandkids do, too).

  • Plant flowers

The previous homeowners of our house did a great job of planting tons of beautiful flowers in the front yard – including many, many roses. It’s honestly one of my favorite things. I love driving up right now and being welcomed by such a beautiful sight.

I recommend getting flowers that come back year after year – you do have to take care of them a bit to make sure they keep coming back, but it is easier than planting new flowers every year. I just think flowers can make even the drabbest of homes a little more beautiful.

  • Add patio furniture or decorations

The sky is the limit with this one. You could put a wreath on your door, patio furniture on the porch, or seasonal decor. I just think this makes homes more welcoming when they have a little bit of decor.

  • Solar powered lights

I keep seeing solar powered lights at Costco, and I really want to get some. I just think they look so nice in the front yard.

  • Add new lighting

One thing I really like on the front of our house is the front porch light. It looks pretty classy!

  • Install Window Boxes

If your windows permit for it, this is a great way to make your home feel more inviting. Window boxes are great for planting flowers in the spring (and as I’ve already mentioned…I love flowers!).

  • Add fencing

I’m not suggesting adding a big fence around your whole yard, but you could add a little fence around your mailbox (this is what my parent’s have) or somewhere else in the yard!

  • Fountains, Benches, etc.

As I walk around our neighborhood, I often pay attention to what people have done with their yards. There is one home that we pass by regularly that has a little bench setup under their tree, and I just love it. You could also add little water fixtures (though this does require some maintenance!).

While there are plenty of other things you can do that cost a lot of money, these are relatively simple and affordable options!
