Some of the most fun days of the year come in October and November. So despite the three day snowstorm and below freezing temps we’ve just had in Colorado, I’m definitely crossing my fingers that there are still some great Fall days yet to come.
At our house, we decorate for all seasons, holidays, and birthdays. With a big extended family, we also have a lot of parties and dinners. This was the recent menu we had for our annual Halloween dinner.
After dinner I gave our grandsons Benji, Jack, Liam, Oliver and James each a red clown nose (which I purchased for a dollar each) and asked them to stand in front of the Thankful tree while I took a picture. All I wanted was a nice photo of all of them smiling and looking cute!
They had ideas of their own, but I still think it’s a pretty cute picture.
My number one tip for decorating and entertaining is that it doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. I grew up in a frugal household–as a child I honestly didn’t know people actually bought things that weren’t on sale.
However, as an adult I have learned that The Dollar Tree, Target’s Dollar Spot, and after-holiday clearance sales are all great ways to pick up bargains. Another great place to find super good deals is The Oriental Trading Company, an online sales and catalog company.
I recently found a lot of fun stuff for both our family Halloween and Thanksgiving family parties. Here is one of my favorites:
My grandchildren love to draw and color, so I knew right away this Halloween Table Runner would be a hit. Since I didn’t have an empty table long enough for the whole runner I cut it in half and put it on the round table the boys eat at. At the end of the evening I gave each of the two families one half each to take home and finish coloring. It made clean up super simple too!
I also purchased a Thanksgiving runner. Since we’ll have six additional grandchildren with us that day I’m going to put the whole runner on a six-foot folding table. It will give them lots of room to color and talk and visit before dinner.
Another fun activity I’m looking forward to is the Thankful Tree. Remember the tree the boys were standing in front of with their clown noses? It comes with a package of 24 fall-colored leaves that everyone attaches to the tree after they have written something on it that they are thankful for.
