I don’t think I’ve ever been as busy as I am right now, but as we head into the spring I am trying to find ways to manage so that I maximize both the quantity and quality of time I have with my family. With a new house and young baby, my husband and I are working to create traditions and habits that focus on the family, and the most important one is family dinner.
We just moved into a new house this week, but that didn’t stop us from wanting to enjoy the long weekend and beautiful weather, so of course we wanted to grill out as a family!
The first thing I needed was a recipe, so I turned to the Food Lion app on my phone to get ideas. I looked to see what sort of items were featured in the Weekly Flyer, and once I saw that sirloin steaks were on sale, I knew that was perfect for the grill. With the Food Lion’s Shop & Earn program, I was even able to earn rewards toward my next shopping trip – this makes splurges like steak a little more affordable.
Then I had to find a recipe that would be both simple and delicious. It was a no-brainer once I saw that “Perfect Grilled Steak” was an actual recipe. How could I not try that?
Reading over it, I knew it was something we could do without stress, even without knowing where half of our dishes are! I only needed two ingredients from the store, which I could certainly handle!
See how there’s a heart on the recipe? That’s because I liked it so much I added it to my Favorites, and I’ll be able to access it quickly online or on my app anytime I want to make it again!
I added a few more items to my shopping list so I could get everything I needed in one quick trip. I’m a big fan of the Food Lion app because I can look at the Weekly Flyer and add items directly to a shopping list that I can access via the app on my phone.
Everything that you need to do to plan, prepare and execute a successful trip is available on the app. And as I mentioned earlier, the Shop & Earn program makes it a no-brainer about where I’m going to be shopping – who doesn’t love to feel like they are being paid to shop?
With the app being so convenient and comprehensive, I’ve recently started looking at coupons as a new way to save money and come up with new menu ideas.
I’m a huge nonbeliever in coupons that you have to find, cut out, sort, and remember to redeem at the checkout, when you have a million other things on your mind.
The Food Lion app makes using coupons so much easier and intuitive, even I can handle it. I just read through the list of the available coupons, add them to my shopping list and then see them on my list when I’m in the store.
You can add the coupon to your card with one touch, no scissors necessary!
After I added the coupons to my card so they’re automatically redeemed at the checkout, I also added them to my shopping list so I got them right along with the other items I wanted.
Doesn’t this day look perfect?
You can print off the coupons in the store. There is a convenient kiosk right by the entry way if you prefer to hold them in your hand and remember to get each item while you shop. If that’s not your jam, you can just refer to your shopping list on your phone like I do.
The entry way kiosk is right here, and super easy to use.
The best part about the coupons at Food Lion is that they automatically redeem themselves at checkout once you enter or scan your Food Lion card. I’m such a coupon novice I had to ask the cashier if it really worked, and then look at the screen before I swiped my card to pay, but it really did work!
Marinade for Steak
Ok, back to the Perfect Grilled Steak. Once I got home and was ready to start, I looked at the recipe and looked at my clock. It said it took five minutes to prepare. I got out a gallon Ziplock bag, got out the seven ingredients (counting the Ziplock bag), took a few pictures along the way, put all the ingredients in a bag and sealed it up and took one last picture. It took four minutes. An extra minute I can spend on Facebook later!
Seven ingredients, including the bag, to make Perfect Steaks!
You will need:
- 1 Tablespoon Orange juice
- 2 Tablespoons Honey
- 1/4 cup Soy Sauce
- 1 Tablespoon McCormick Grill Mates Montreal Steak Seasoning
- 2 lb boneless beef sirloin or flank steak
We let the meat marinate overnight and pulled it out the next day to grill. Because we were exhausted from moving and unpacking, we decided at the last minute to cook them on the stove rather than outside. I can’t blame my husband for not wanting to grill after spending hours on his feet unpacking and organizing our entire house. Either way, it was pretty cool that our first meal on our new stove was steak, not something boring like boxed pasta.
How to Grill Steaks
Just let it marinate a few hours or overnight, and then grill away – set your skillet or grill to medium-high heat, and then place the steaks on the hot surface. You will want to cook each side for about five minutes. Easy peasy!
Turns out, grilling on the stove was a breeze and I’ll probably do it again next weekend. In the time it took to make a side salad, my husband had the steaks all cooked and ready to devour.

Was is the perfect grilled steak? Pretty much. It tasted amazing. Everyone was impressed with the quality of the meat and the flavor too. I was impressed with cleanup. It took all of throwing away the used Ziplock bag and washing the grill. Perfect way to spend a holiday.
One new thing I found out is that Food Lion has rolled out another money saving aspect to their system and it is available on the app. The Shop & Earn program will be just that-you load rewards to your card, buy items at Food Lion, and automatically earn credit towards your next Food Lion trip. Sounds pretty useful and I can’t wait to try it!
