HelloFresh Review and Discount Code
Have you heard of HelloFresh?
Chances are, if you have an Instagram or Facebook account, you’ve seen some kind of post or advertisement for this meal delivery service.
If you are like me, you are intrigued but a little nervous to try it.
Will the food taste good?
Can I justify the cost?
Is it a good idea?
I know I asked myself all those questions and more when I first saw it – and then last year, I finally did, and I LOVED it.
So when HelloFresh asked if I’d like to review another box and share my experience, I jumped at the opportunity, because I really think it’s the best meal delivery service (and I’ve tried a couple different ones. HelloFresh wins every time).
So if you are here today asking yourself the question, “Should I try HelloFresh?” hopefully this post will help you decide.
What is HelloFresh?
HelloFresh is a subscription service that delivers you all the ingredients – pre portioned right down to small containers of condiments – with a detailed recipe to help you create a delicious recipe at home.
You can choose between 2 and 3 meals a week, and there are a variety of different options (family meal, traditional, and veggie).
All the meals are shipped to your house, and the ingredients are all separated into these bags.
How does HelloFresh Work?
When you want to setup your HelloFresh order, all you have to do is go to the website, signup, and place an order.
Each week, you will get a large box that contains all the food for the meals you’ve chosen. Before you get your shipment each week, you can see what’s on the menu, and select what you want to be sent to you.
When you get your box, you just need to place all the ingredients into the fridge. Everything is separated into brown bags, so you can just grab the bag you need when you need it.
Each box includes a detailed, picture directions card. All you have to do is follow it, and in about 30 minutes, you’ll have a yummy meal.
Here’s a visual of the checkout process so you can know exactly how to do it!
Go to HelloFresh.com
You will navigate to the “Our Plans” section and select which plan you want.
You will then be prompted to create an account.
After that, you will enter in your address and credit card information (and your HelloFresh discount code, if you have one!)
You will then be able to customize your menu. There are typically several different options available, and you can pick which ones sound best to your family.
You can click all the options to see all the nutrition information. I like how it lists what common allergens are not in each meal.
You can navigate through about a month’s worth of meal plans and set up your shipment for each week. Be aware that you do need to skip a week if you decide you don’t want it one week, because this is an autoship service.
How much does HelloFresh Cost?
This will depend on what plan you get. As of right now, here is the pricing structure for the different plans (the amount per serving doesn’t change when you toggle between the different options available under each section):
Rest assured, there is almost always a discount code available to make it a little less expensive to try out.
Does HelloFresh taste good?
We never eat better than when we have a box from HelloFresh.
The meals are hearty but made from fresh ingredients. Everything smells so good as I”m eating it, and I absolutely LOVE everything that we ate.
I really like that it introduces new flavors and ideas in a subtle way. My boys (2 and 5) had no issue gobbling down every meal we had. As I look through the menu options for each week, my mouth waters!
The food really is good. There is no lacking of flavor, which is important to me.
My Experience with HelloFresh
Our HelloFresh box arrived about an hour before we got home. It was packed with ice, and everything was still cold.
When we opened the box, we were greeted with the recipes and a new apron. Perfect!
While you can preview what you will be getting online before it arrives, I didn’t do this, so it was fun to see what all the recipes were.
I then pulled out the three brown bags that contained most of the ingredients for the meals. The only ingredients missing were the meats for each meal, as well as tortellini, which was packed separately.
I love how everything is packed neatly into the brown bag. I think what I love most is how they send exactly the portions you need, so you really don’t waste anything.
The instructions are extremely detailed, which is why I think this makes for the perfect service for everyone – the food is delicious and flavorful enough for a seasoned chef, but they are easy enough for a beginner to make.
Here are the three recipes we made, as well as my thoughts on the process:
Night One – Phantom Tortellini Bolognese
I was so excited when I saw this one on the menu. We love anything with pasta in our home, and everything about this meal sounded delicious.
It had ground beef, cheese tortellini, a delicious Bolognese, and it was topped with bread crumbs and parmesan cheese. I think that this was my favorite meal of the three (though it was hard to choose). My boys kept asking for more.
Night Two – Creamy Dill Chicken
I’m the type of person who usually overcomplicates meals and adds lots of ingredients and steps. However, in doing so, I often forget the simplicity that comes from simple ingredients like potaotes, chicken, and green beans.
I loved everything about this meal. The dill sauce on top was AMAZING, and I actually loved dipping my potatoes and green beans in it. Very easy to make.
Night Three – Pork and Thai Basil Stir Fry
I was a little skeptical about this one, because I’d never used some of the ingredients in it! However, I pushed forward, made the meal, and I’m glad that I didn’t give into my initial hesitations. It was very flavorful, and it was extremely hearty.
Overall, everything went really smoothly. There’s just something so nice about knowing that you have all the ingredients you need, the recipe has been tried and tested, and you know it’s going to taste good.
We got the Family Plan, which is technically four servings. However, for our family, we definitely had leftovers, so if you have small children, you could probably get away with getting the classic plan, which can make this even more affordable.
I’ll admit that I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it again, but honestly, I loved the experience, and I’m planning to do it once or twice a month.
Pros and Cons of HelloFresh
I think it is a great service, and it certainly makes for an easier time planning your meals. I have a friend who said she started using HelloFresh just as a way to make her life simpler. I heard recently that people who spend a little bit of money to make their lives easier generally are happier.
However, it’s not for everyone. So here are the major pros and cons I see to HelloFresh:
Easy to do – it’s super easy to sign up for, but what I love most is how easy it is to prepare the meals. Yes, you have to chop some things, but for the most part, everything is ready to go, and you just have to follow instructions.
Recipes are delicious – as I already mentioned, the food is really good. I was not remotely disappointed with any of the meals we had, and it was really fun to make them!
New Ideas – I would never have even thought to make any of the recipes they sent me. I love that it introduces me to new ideas.
Easy to replicate meals later – they include the recipe (and you can see them online afterward) so you can easily make it yourself later on.
Easy to involve the family – we all helped put together the meals, and I love being able to cook in the kitchen together. It’s nice not to have to worry about running to the store for an ingredient we forgot!
Variety of options and easy to customize – there are multiple different options each week that you can choose from, and they are all so different! I love that you are able to choose what you get and you don’t have to worry about them just sending you something and not knowing what is going to come.
Price – if you are like me, you can often get your meals for under $10 total for all the servings. So if you are used to that kind of price per meal (for your whole family), the price might seem like quite a shock. However, if you factor in the quality of the ingredients, and the time you save not going to the store, it can balance out.
Meals do require preparation – most of the meals do require some chopping and cooking; if you are looking for meals you can just dump in the slow cooker and go, it’s probably not the best fit.
Can’t control the time it arrives – our box came before we were home, and I don’t think we really had much control over that. It came via a major shipping company, so it was more based on their time. Just plan to be home on the day your shipment is set to arrive!
