I'm the exact same way! I got my degree knowing that I never truly wanted a career and I just wanted to be a SAHM. Lots of people seemed to care deeply for some reason about it but for the reasons you stated, I'm glad I did. I made friends, experiences, connections, memories, etc. I really never knew anyone else felt like this!:)

I hear you 100%. I'm just 22 years-old and have completed 2 years of my bachelors in nursing. I was so afraid of "falling behind" my peers that I made a mess of my life during my daughters first year. I was working and going to school full time, while trying to maintain my status as a home maker. To add fuel to the fire I was still invested in the idea of enjoying my youth with my friends. Spiritual guidance has led me to condense my life into a more practical structure. I now stay at home with my daughter and manage school by choosing online courses when I can and choosing on-campus classes that are consistent with my husband's days off from work. I'm a strong believer in life-long learning. The more you know the more you are, and I want to be the best example for my daughter, I'm glad that there are other moms out there that I can look up to! :)

This is awesome! Thanks for your post. I have struggled for years with my choice to go to University since I didn't really go with the intention of getting a "job" out of it. I went to Art School and it was really just to better myself as an artist and to learn to think differently, as you also mentioned, outside of the public school arena. I have also experienced at least two men make insensitive remarks to me. One asked me if I was in school to get my "Mrs." degree. And another man recently remarked that my brain must be mush from being home for 8 years with my kids (to which I replied that he doesn't know me nor do I share my deeper thoughts with him because I didn't think he could keep up). It was so hard for me to start being a SAHM and stop making money. It was especially hard when my husband paid my student loans. I was simultaneously grateful and ashamed. It has taken me a long time to realize my own worth in our home and that the person I am today is largely because of my education and you know what…I LIKE ME!!! I am still constantly learning and taking classes and NO ONE should ever make you feel like investment in your own education is a waste!!! The opening of your mind can only make you a better spouse, mother, daughter and human being in general.

In reply to <a href="https://www.clarkscondensed.com/college-degree-stay-at-home-mom/#comment-104790">Katelyn Fagan</a>.

THank you Katelyn! I'm not sure how I managed being pregnant, or having a baby in the middle of the semester (I threw up many times on campus!) Lots of tender mercies for sure.

I totally understand everything you said. I don't think that learning necessarily has to come from a college degree, but I think getting some kind of training of some kind after graduation is so important. I love that you are goign to encourage your kids to get their associates in high school -- I wish I had known I could have done that (might have made my last year of high school a little more challenging!) I think all kids are different, and what's right for one isn't right for another. I even think of some of my siblings, who didn't go to college, but were able to do other things and learn other ways. For instance, one of my sister's became a certified teacher for Montessori preschool, and it was great for her. I believe that education starts in the home, and if we encourage our children to do the best they can and pursue a worthwhile goal, they'll turn out okay. Now if my child doesn't want to do anything but live in my basement forever...that's another story!

Thanks for your insights though. Always enjoy hearing your opinion!

I love this post Katie! I really do. Way to support your decision and rock it! I don't know how you managed a year of school with a child, but you did it. That's something to be proud of for sure. I thought it was hard enough being pregnant for 9 months of school with twins!

My feelings on a college degree for my kids are mixed sometimes... And sometimes I really wish I would've majored in something else, you know something slightly more beneficial than a degree in art and a minor in music. While I love art, and have a natural talent for it, I have done very little with that knowledge and talent in the past several years. And then there's my husband who attended IU for three years straight out of high school, pretty much wasting money doing so because he really wasn't sure what he wanted to do yet with his life, or how to study or learn.

So, while I too value education, I don't think true education has to come in the form of a college degree. But, I think degrees are important, and really necessary in today's market (which I also have mixed feelings on). I say this of course as my husband wants to become a college professor. lol. Our plan is to encourage our kids to earn an associates while still in high school, encourage missions, and then play it a bit by ear... Do they want to forgo college to start their own company? Pursue a technical degree, become a fire fighter? What? The good thing is they'll likely have reduced college admission thanks to my husband's employment, just in case. ;)

Wow, sorry, that was long. :)

Thank you so much for your comment! I was a little nervous about posting this, because I wasn't sure if there would be negative comments, so it was so great to get such a nice comment. I can't believe how rude people can be. You had every right to the scholarships you earned. People like you are who I wrote this post for :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
