Hi, Robert! Thank you so much for sharing this information - I had no idea they updated the guidelines for that! What a relief! That makes them even better in my eyes :)

I'm currently looking into Christian Healthcare Ministries. It's the least expensive option for my family and seems to have the best coverage ($500 "deductible" for the Gold option is lower than every other service I checked). I noticed that you said CHM doesn't cover transportation (i.e. ambulance). However, their latest guidelines include this statement:

CHM does not share bills incurred for medical transport unless a physician determines (as verified by medical records) that medical transport was:
a. necessary to preserve the member’s life, limb or eyesight, and
b. the transport was either from the site of the emergency to the closest medical facility, or between medical facilities because the sending facility lacked the capability of providing the appropriate level of care.

https://www.chministries.org/media/5189/chmguidelines.pdf

So it sounds like they cover transportation if it's for a true emergency AND it's to the nearest hospital with the necessary facilities.

Also, you mentioned mammograms and colonoscopies not being covered. The guidelines don't mention mammograms, but they do say that colonoscopy bills are typically shared.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with CHM!

I had no issues at all! I would call them up though and explain your situation. Since it's been four years and you haven't had issues, I don't think it would fall in their pre-existing conditions clause.

Did you have any issues getting your bills from your endometriosis excision paid by CHM? I had excision for endometriosis 4 years ago and have been great every since. We are looking into healthshare groups because insurance is so expensive, but I don’t want to sign up for something that will end up not paying or making it really difficult to get them to pay if I ever end up needing additional excision. How was your experience with CHM regarding endometriosis and surgery?

Of course! I think it's an especially great thing for people who are self-employed; the costs are astronomical for little to no coverage unless something really expensive happens. I have heard good thing about Medi-Share - I think it's one of the more well-known companies :)

Thanks for sharing this with people! My parents are small business owners who decided to go with a medical sharing network quite a few years ago to cover their medical expenses. They are with Christian Care Medishare. I'm not sure how good their coverage is, but I think it's great that there are other options besides Obamacare out there for people! The premiums for that have been going up and I can't imagine having to pay those prices (we have insurance through my husband's employer)

I think they actually changed that! I was just reading their documentation, and it says that you need to be a member 300 days before your due date. A normal pregnancy is about 280 days, so that would be 20 days before you got pregnant :)

And I love that it doesn't matter how many kids you have! That's how regular insurance used to be. I sure wish they covered well-child visits though, too! That's why I initially went with Liberty :)

One point you might want to add on Maternity for CHM is you have to be a part of their program for at least 90 days before getting pregnant or they will not cover the pregnancy, birth, or post care for you or baby. We unfortunately had to learn that the hard way.

Another point is on the memberships with CHM, all children are considered a single unit. So if you have 1 kid, that unit is $150. If you have 5 kids, that unit is still $150.

Overall though, we've had CHM (Gold) for 2 years and love them. Although I would love them a lot more if they covered well child visits. ;)

Hi, Tanya!

Thanks so much for your comment. I'm so glad that you've found this helpful.

We have been using CHM now for a little while, and I do like them. We haven't had to have any claims (thankfully), but they've been quick to respond to all my questions and queries. I like that I get a newsletter each month, and I also get to see who our monthly contribution is helping. I have no doubt that if we were to have a claim that it would be covered. I wish I could give you more insight on the claims process, but I have felt at peace with our decision to go with CHM.

Hi Katie, I am thankful for your comparison and information. In looking at the info on the site for CHM, it appears to be what I am looking for. Thank you. Now that you are a few months in, what are your thoughts/experience?
